Garneau’s historical background
Considered one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. Garneau is an incredibly historic area. Before 1912, the area that we know today as Garneau had the name “Strathcona City”. Its current name came from the first inhabitants of the area: Laurent Garneau, along with his wife and family. Laurent was a Manitoba Métis rebel, and once his family settled in, the area got popular. From here the neighbourhood grew to what it is today.
